The central theme in The Leopard is that of the conflict between the present and the past. The Leopard represents all who are willing to take advantage of what they have now in order to change what they see as wrong with their country's history, but refuses to adopt new customs or habits for fear of losing what he believes in. He believes in old ways, old traditions, and an Italy that continues the way she was. The people he hates are those who do not belong to his idealized past. His nephew, Tancredi (Alain Delon), is a young man who has been "modernized," and he is the focus of the movie. Like The Leopard, he does all that he can to support his country and tradition while still trying to accept change. During Clelio's (Burt Lancaster) funeral, Tancredi shoots at the procession and tries to assassinate the Baroness (Claudia Cardinale). He wants to send a message of revolution to those who are willing to reject everything that Italy stands for. The message received is not one of change but of an attempt to suppress new ideas. The audience is also reminded of the brutality of war when Tancredi's best friend, Nino (Anthony Steffen), kills a member of the Baroness' party. The Leopard shows how men are willing to sacrifice for what they believe in. The film emphasizes on how people used to do things and the way they observe them change. Battle scenes such as when Clelio and his army go against the Spanish troops in Castel del Monte, depicts how the past was respected while the present is no longer on par with it. This exemplifies on how important traditions and customs were and how they show that what used to be old ways had become outdated even though some still cling to them. The film also portrays how men can be willing to die for what they believe in. The scene when the French General, Comte de Fours (Leslie Nielsen), decides to surrender to the Italian army is of particular significance. He states "I've had enough war." and releases his cannons and his soldiers of war. The Leopard suggests that it is okay to make mistakes and still stick with your principles and beliefs, unlike people of today who try hard not to make mistakes and avoid taking any risks at all costs. The film implies that men are willing to give up their beauty and cleanliness for their family's sake. For example, the Leopard's son disobeys his father and gets married; this shows that he is willing to marry a woman he barely knows and one who doesn't fit into his father's prophecy of the future wife of the Prince. The film takes place in Italy around 1860 and emphasizes on how people conduct themselves. The law is not as organized as it is today, so honor was a major aspect of society. Also, marriage was a big deal because making a good match could bring prestige to both families. In addition, despite women being expected to behave "properly," they were always respected for their importance in society.
